Geschichte der St. Anne's Church of Shandon

Der Name Shandon kommt von den irischen Wörtern Sean Dun, was soviel heisst wie “altes Fort”. Shandon war eine von 28 Siedlungen in und um das antike Cork, der heute zweitgrössten Stadt Irlands. Die Kirche wurde 1722 in Shandon gebaut, welches immer noch ein Stadtteil Corks ist. Der Hauptgrund für den Bau der St. Anne’s Church war ein Anstieg der Bevölkerungszahl, was zur Folge hatte, dass die alte Kirche, St. Mary’s, zu klein wurde.

Die Glocken

Die Kirche ist berühmt für ihre 8 Glocken, aufgrund des relativ bekannten Liedes “The bells of Shandon” *.  Jede wiegt 6 Tonnen. Heute können Besucher die Glocken selber läuten.

Folgendes ist in den Glocken eingraviert: - Wenn du uns läutest, werden wir süss singen – Gott bewahre die Kirche und den König – Gesundheit und Wohlstand allen unsern Wohltätern – Frieden und gute Nachbarschaft – Wohlstand der Stadt und davon Handel – Wir wurden alle geformt in Gloucester in England von Abel Rudhall 1750 – Seit Grosszügigkeit unsere Münder geöffnet hat, sollen unsere Zungen es laut preisen – Solange wir leben, besuchen wir die Kirche und druecken unsere Anliegen aus - im Tod wird man sich dann darauf berufen.

Die Uhr

Die Uhr der Church of St. Anne hat vier Zifferblätter. Alle zeigen eine leicht unterschiedliche Zeit an. Dies ist, weil die Zahlen auf den Ziffernblättern aus Holz gemacht sind. Die Holzstücke sind unterschiedlich dick. Wenn also ein Zeiger auf eine dicke Zahl trifft, bleibt er für einige Zeit hängen.

History of St. Anne's Church of Shandon

The name Shandon comes from the Irish words Sean Dun, which means Old Fort. Shandon was one of 28 settlements in and around ancient Cork, today the second largest city of Ireland. The church was built in 1722, in Shandon, still a quarter of Cork . The main reason for the construction of St. Anne’s Church was population growth, which meant that the old church, St. Mary’s, became too small.

Bells

The church is famous for its 8 bells due to the quite famous song “The bells of Shandon”. Each of them weighs 6 tons. Today, visitors can ring the bells themselves.

The following is written on each bell: - When us you ring we'll sweetly sing - God preserve the Church and King - Health and prosperity to all our benefactors - Peace and good neighbourhood - Prosperity to the city and trade thereof - We were all cast at Gloucester in England by Abel Rudhall 1750 - Since generosity has opened our mouths our tongues shall sing aloud its praise - I to the Church the living call and to the grave do summon all –

Clocks

The clock of the Church of St. Anne has four faces. All of them show a slightly different time. This is because the numbers on the faces are made of different types of wood. Some of that wood is thicker than others, so when the fingers reach the thicker wood, they get stuck.
